Why Milestii Mici holds a world record

The winery lies about fifteen kilometres south of Chisinau and works out of the former limestone quarries at Milestii Mici. The stone taken from here went into the walls of the capital, and the void left behind turned out to be ideal for wine: steady temperature, high humidity and total darkness.

The temperature holds naturally between 12 and 14 degrees all year. Photo: Pexels

The underground network runs to roughly two hundred kilometres of galleries, of which only a part, around fifty five kilometres, is actually used for storage. Depths range from thirty to eighty five metres below ground.

The record comes from the collection. Around two million bottles are kept here, of which some one and a half million form the Golden Collection, listed by Guinness as the largest wine collection in the world. The bottles lie in niches cut straight into the limestone, dusty and coated in noble mould, exactly as they should be.

Twelve degrees sounds mild until you spend an hour and a half in it. In summer the difference from outside can be twenty degrees, and the galleries are damp. A light jacket makes the whole difference, whatever month you visit.

Cricova, the underground town with wine streets

Cricova sits a similar distance from the capital, but to the north. It has roughly one hundred and twenty kilometres of galleries, about half of them in use, and the same origin: limestone quarries turned into a winery in the middle of the last century.

The difference is atmosphere. At Cricova the galleries were laid out as a town, with real road signs and streets named after grape varieties: Cabernet, Feteasca, Pinot. You move around by car or on a small electric train, and the junctions genuinely carry traffic signs.

Cricova makes sparkling wine by the classic method, with the second fermentation in the bottle, a tradition started here in the nineteen fifties. In the galleries you can see the racks where bottles are turned by hand, a quarter turn a day, to collect the sediment in the neck.

The vinoteca holds bottles more than eight decades old, and part of the space is rented out as private storage, including to some very well known clients. The tasting rooms are themed and elaborately built, which splits opinion: some find them spectacular, others find them kitsch. Either way they are memorable.

Visiting: booking, tour and tasting

Neither cellar takes walk-in visitors. Tours are booked in advance, through the form on the website or by telephone, and at weekends and during harvest the slots fill days ahead.

Booking is compulsory, at least a few days ahead. Programme and details on the Milestii Mici site and on the Cricova site.

A tour runs an hour and a half to two hours, tasting included.

Guiding is available in Romanian, English and Russian, but you specify the language when you book.

Prices start at roughly fifteen euros a head for the basic package and rise towards forty for extended tastings with food.

Small groups usually pay a minimum per tour, so two people cost more per head than six.

You go underground in your own car or in the winery transport, depending on the package.

Moldovan law on drink driving is strict, and a full tasting means five or six wines. Bring a driver who does not drink, take a package that includes a transfer from Chisinau, or order a taxi. The return fare from the capital costs far less than the alternative.

Both cellars have a shop at the exit, at prices noticeably below retail. Taking wine out of the country is no problem in reasonable quantities, but check the duty free allowance for entering the European Union if you are driving back with a full boot.

What people drink in Moldova

The country has one of the largest vineyard areas in the world relative to its territory, and wine is by far its most important export. There are three protected zones: Codru in the centre, Valul lui Traian in the south west and Stefan Voda in the south east.

Rara Neagra, a lighter and more perfumed native red, often blended with Feteasca Neagra.

Feteasca Alba and Feteasca Regala, everyday whites with good acidity.

Viorica, an aromatic white bred locally, floral and very easy to drink.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, widely planted and well made.

Sparkling wine by the classic method, the Cricova speciality.

If you want to understand the landscape beyond the two big names, the official Wines of Moldova portal maps the wineries open to visitors, many of them small and far more personal than the underground galleries.

Milestii Mici and Cricova are the same thing seen from two angles: limestone quarries that became, through a happy geological accident, the largest cellars in the region. One impresses with numbers, the other with the way it has been built out.

Book ahead, bring a jacket, do not drive after the tasting and leave room in the boot. The rest looks after itself.

What Orheiul Vechi actually is

The complex lies about sixty kilometres north east of Chisinau, between the villages of Trebujeni and Butuceni. The Raut, a tributary of the Dniester, has cut a gorge into the limestone with walls several dozen metres high, leaving a promontory defended by water on three sides.

The Raut loops tightly around the Butuceni promontory. Photo: Pexels

A landform like that defends itself, which is why people kept settling here. The present name, meaning old Orhei, comes from the fact that the medieval town on this site was abandoned around the year 1500 and the settlement moved some eighteen kilometres north, to the Orhei of today.

The area is now a cultural and natural reserve and sits on the UNESCO tentative list as an archaeological landscape. In practice that means building is controlled and the valley villages have kept their scale.

The layers of history on one promontory

Few places in Eastern Europe gather so many periods in so small a perimeter. Excavation has turned up traces of entirely different civilisations, one on top of the other.

Getic and Dacian fortifications, the oldest organised defences on the promontory.

A Golden Horde town of the fourteenth century called Sehr al-Cedid, with a caravanserai, public baths and a mosque. This is the layer that most surprises visitors.

A Moldavian fortress of the fifteenth century, raised over the ruins of the Tatar town.

The cave monastery, cut by Orthodox monks into the limestone wall.

The villages of Butuceni and Trebujeni, inhabited without interruption to this day.

Illustrative image of a valley with a meander. Photo: Pexels

Of the Moldavian fortress you now see mainly the outline of the walls and the foundations, marked at ground level. Do not expect standing masonry. The value of the place lies in the stratigraphy and the landscape, not in architectural spectacle.

The cave monastery and the rules for visiting

The church is cut directly into the limestone of the wall facing the valley, reached by a path and a short flight of steps. The interior is small, low and cold, with cells hewn from the rock and windows opening straight onto the river meander. The effect is powerful precisely because everything is so modest.

On the plateau above the cliff stand the bell tower and the masonry church, built much later, at the end of the nineteenth century. From there you get the best view over the gorge and the village below.

Butuceni, the village in the valley

Butuceni has a few hundred residents and one main lane, with white houses, stone walls and wooden gates. It is one of the few villages in the region not reshaped by apartment blocks or oversized new building.

This is where the local tourism actually happens: guesthouses in traditional houses, meals of savoury pies, chicken soup and homemade wine, cart rides and, sometimes, evenings of local music. There are several good places to sleep in the village itself, which changes the visit completely.

The difference between a day trip and a night here is the light. Early morning and late evening, once the day visitors have gone, the gorge empties and all you hear is the water. That night is worth it.

Late spring and autumn, for colour and for reasonable temperatures. In summer the valley bakes and there is no shade on the plateau. For photography, the first hour after sunrise and the last before sunset, from the plateau by the bell tower.

By car it is straightforward: the main road is surfaced almost to the village. Public transport works but needs planning, because the minibuses run a few services a day and the last one back leaves early. Check the timetable on the day, not a week ahead.

The visitor centre at the entrance to Butuceni holds the introductory exhibition and sells tickets. Current opening hours and the other sights in the area are listed on the official portal moldova.travel, and the historical background to the site is summarised on Wikipedia.

With a car, combine the visit with a small winery in the Codru zone or with Curchi monastery, less than an hour away. That makes a comfortable full day without rushing.

Orheiul Vechi is a place where geography decided everything: a meander that cut through limestone and left a promontory on which Dacians, Tatars, Moldavians and monks settled in turn. Above all of it sits a village that still looks like a village.

Stay the night in Butuceni if you can. By day you see the sights, but in the evening you see the place.

Why Chisinau looks the way it does

The city was hit three times in a single decade: a severe earthquake in 1940, the bombing and fighting of the Second World War, and the demolitions of the years immediately after. Very little of the old fabric survived.

The centre was rebuilt almost entirely after 1945. Photo: Pexels

Postwar reconstruction followed a master plan signed by Alexey Shchusev, an architect born in this city and the designer of Lenin mausoleum in Moscow. That is where the wide boulevards, the lines of trees and the heavy public buildings in the centre come from.

Chisinau has roughly 640,000 residents. Photo: Pexels

The result is a city with no compact historic core but with a coherence of its own. It walks very well, distances in the centre are short and greenery is everywhere. Chisinau counts among the greenest capitals in Europe, and you notice that within minutes.

Day one: the centre, the parks and the boulevard

Almost everything that matters lines up on and around Stefan cel Mare boulevard, the main axis of the city. An unhurried day on foot covers this half.

The Triumphal Arch, raised in 1840, the most photographed landmark in the city.

The Nativity Cathedral and the park around it, with the bell tower rebuilt in 1997 after being demolished in 1962.

The Stefan cel Mare public garden, the oldest park in the city, with the Alley of Classics and its busts of writers.

The monument to Stefan cel Mare at the park entrance, the symbolic reference point of the city.

The Government House and the Parliament building, official late Soviet architecture.

Great National Assembly Square, where the city has gathered at its important moments.

The afternoon is better spent in the parks. Valea Morilor has a lake and a monumental stairway, while Valea Trandafirilor is wilder and less manicured. Both fill with locals after work, which makes them more interesting than the sights themselves.

Trolleybuses and buses charge a few lei, and taxi apps are very cheap by Western European standards. There is no point renting a car if you are staying in the city. Keep cash in Moldovan lei for transport and the market.

Day two: museums, Soviet legacy and the market

The second day splits well between two good museums and a walk among the buildings that the standard guides skip.

The city also carries a heavy Jewish history, worth knowing before you walk around it. Before the Second World War a substantial share of the population was Jewish, and the pogrom of 1903 drew international attention. The Jewish cemetery survives, along with the memorial to the victims of the ghetto.

Where to eat and what to drink

Food is the strongest argument the city has and by some distance the cheapest. The cooking is close to Romanian Moldavian cuisine, with accents of its own.

Getting there and what to know

Moldova is outside the European Union, so documents are checked at the border. Many nationalities enter visa free for short stays, but check your own rules. The currency is the Moldovan leu, easily changed in the centre, and cards work in most places in the capital. For the market and transport you need cash.

Chisinau works well in two days, but the city is also the logical base for the rest of the country. A third day covers either the underground cellars or Orheiul Vechi. With four days you do both without rushing. For wine, the best moment is the first weekend of October, at the national wine celebration.

Conclusion

Chisinau does not sell itself with old towns and postcard views, because it does not have them. It sells itself with parks, very good food at low prices, an architecture you either love or photograph, and the odd sensation of being abroad and at home at once.

Two days in the city, one at the cellars or at Orheiul Vechi, and you have one of the best short breaks in this part of Europe.

Soroca Fortress and its strange geometry

The fortification here began as a timber fort, raised at the end of the fifteenth century by Stephen the Great as a link in the defensive line along the Dniester. The stone fortress you see today was built in the fifteen forties, during the reign of Petru Rares.

The wall carries five towers, four round and one square. Photo: Pexels

The plan is what makes it special: a perfect circle, with five towers set at equal intervals around the circumference. Four are round and the fifth, square, houses the gate. The proportions are so exact that it has long been suggested an Italian architect familiar with Renaissance fortification worked on the design.

The fortress was restored in recent years and the wooden galleries along the walls were rebuilt. You can walk them, make a full circuit of the enclosure and come down into the inner courtyard, where you realise how small the enclosed space really is. The visit takes about an hour.

Its place in the Moldavian line of fortresses

Soroca was never conceived on its own. It formed part of a system of fortifications guarding the eastern and southern frontier of medieval Moldavia, with garrisons able to signal to one another.

Hotin, to the north, today in Ukraine.

Soroca, at the midpoint of the Dniester.

Tighina, further south on the same river.

Cetatea Alba, at the mouth of the Dniester, also in Ukraine today.

Suceava and Neamt, the fortresses of the interior.

Anyone who has visited the fortresses in Romania will notice the difference in scale at once. Soroca is small and compact, built for a modest garrison and for watching a crossing point, not for long sieges. That is exactly why the circular plan makes sense: on a circle, defenders can move quickly in any direction.

The hill of mansions, the other face of the town

On the hill above the town lies the most unusual residential area in Moldova. This is where the Roma community of Soroca lives, and the houses built here over recent decades copy, at their own scale, famous buildings from around the world.

Among them you can recognise outlines drawn from the Bolshoi Theatre, from Saint Peter basilica and from the United States Capitol, mixed with towers, columns and gleaming metal roofs. Some houses are finished and lived in, others stand as bare structure. The overall effect is hard to describe and impossible to mistake.

Soroca is regarded as the symbolic centre of the Roma community in the country. The area is visited on foot, along the street, like any other neighbourhood, but with the courtesy that implies: these are people homes, not a museum. Photograph yards, windows or people only with their agreement, and if you are invited in, the invitation is genuine and worth honouring.

The Candle of Gratitude and the wider area

A few kilometres from the town, on a cliff above the Dniester, stands the Candle of Gratitude, a tower shaped monument raised in 2004. A long stairway of more than six hundred steps leads up to it, and from the top you look out over a good stretch of the river valley.

The monument is dedicated to those who preserved the language and the historical memory of the region, and it carries a strong symbolic charge locally. For a visitor it is above all the best viewpoint in the area.

The Dniester runs right past the town, and the far bank is already Ukraine. This is one of the few places where a border is simply visible from a cliff, with no fencing and no infrastructure. On the road up from Chisinau it is worth stopping at the cave monasteries of Tipova and Saharna, both cut into limestone banks above the river.

It works comfortably as a day trip from Chisinau, but the return drive takes five hours, so leave early. With your own car you can link the visit to the monasteries along the Dniester and turn the day into a route rather than a dash.

Opening hours for the fortress and any local events are worth checking on the official portal moldova.travel. If you want to add a tasting, the map of wineries open to the public is on Wines of Moldova.

In Soroca and along the road, cards are not accepted everywhere. You need Moldovan lei for tickets, for food on the spot and for a local guide if you take one. Change money in Chisinau, where the rate is better.

Because a circular plan lets defenders move quickly in any direction and spreads the load of the wall evenly.
Conclusion

Soroca Fortress is small, exact and quite unlike what you expect from a medieval fort: a circle of stone on the bank of a river that is now a border. The town around it adds a contrast you will not find anywhere else.

Leave Chisinau early, stop at the monasteries along the Dniester and leave time for the hill. It is a day with far more in it than a single sight.
