Lake Koman is a reservoir on the Drin river in northern Albania, and the ferry that crosses it has become one of the best known journeys in the Balkans. What Lake Koman actually is

The water flooded a narrow gorge, and the result is a channel sometimes under a hundred metres wide, with walls of several hundred metres on both sides. In places the boat runs into what looks like a dead end, and the channel only opens at the last moment.

There are whole villages along the shore with no road access. The ferry brings them goods, takes children to school and people to hospital. That is why it runs to a public service timetable rather than a cruise schedule.

The drive to the jetty, the part everyone underestimates

The starting point is the Koman dam, about two hours by car from Shkodër. The road is surfaced for most of the way, but the last few kilometres are narrow and exposed.

The final stretch passes through a tunnel cut into rock, unlit, wide enough for one vehicle, with an uneven surface. Getting there without your own car
Minibuses leave Shkodër in the morning and transfer directly to the jetty, timed to the ferry departure. They are booked a day ahead through your accommodation or a local agency and cost around ten euros a person. It is the simplest option and it spares you the tunnel. If you drive yourself, check in advance whether the boat you booked carries vehicles, because not all of them do, and the vehicle spaces are few and fill quickly in summer.

Which boat to take and how it works

Several vessels run on the lake and the experience differs considerably between them. The basic distinction is between the scheduled ferry, a converted vessel carrying cargo and locals on an open deck, and the smaller tourist boats.

What you see over the three hours

There is no single high point but a succession of openings and narrows. The walls change orientation at every bend, and the light shifts completely across the three hours.

Stops are short and unannounced: the boat pulls in wherever somebody is waiting, one person gets off with two sacks, and it moves on. There are no built jetties, just a concrete platform or even a spit of rock.

Stay on deck rather than in the cabin. In summer the sun is strong and there is no shade, so bring a hat and sunscreen. In spring and autumn a cold wind blows across the water even when it is warm ashore. Bring an extra layer whatever the month.

The water level varies considerably. In spring it is at its highest and the lake looks its best. By late summer, after drought, the level drops and bare shoreline shows above the water, which changes the impression entirely.

What to do once you land at Fierzë

The ferry drops you at Fierzë, which is not a destination but a transfer point. Almost everyone continues in the same direction, and transport waits at the jetty.

On to Bajram Curri, the nearest town, about thirty minutes away.
Further to Valbona, the mountain village at the head of the valley, another hour on.
From Valbona the classic route crosses the pass to Theth, a day on foot.
Alternatively, towards Kosovo: the border is less than an hour from Bajram Curri.

The usual combination is a circuit: Shkodër, ferry, Valbona, the walk over to Theth, then back to Shkodër on the mountain road. It takes a minimum of four days and is the most popular itinerary in northern Albania.

It was laid out in 2012 through a development cooperation project, and the stated aim was not tourism but income for villages that were emptying. It is the only trail in Europe for which you need permits from the police of three countries.

What Peaks of the Balkans is and who it suits

The trail loops through the Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains, passing through the three countries that share the massif. It does not climb summits but crosses passes, and the maximum altitude is around two thousand metres.

Days run ten to twenty kilometres, with six to eight hours of actual walking. Most people add one or two spare days for bad weather or rest, so in practice the trail takes eleven to thirteen days.

The cross-border permits, step by step

This is what stops people most often, because it is not intuitive and cannot be sorted out on the spot. The trail crosses borders over mountain passes that are not official crossing points. For each such crossing, the border police of the country concerned issue a named permit.

You need a permit for every border you cross, so for the full circuit, from all three countries.
The application uses your exact passport details, the dates of crossing and the declared route.
Processing normally takes one to three weeks, sometimes longer at the height of the season.
The cost is small, generally under twenty euros a person for all the permits.
Permits cannot be obtained on the spot and cannot be negotiated with a border guard.

How to get them without the hassle
The simplest route, used by almost everyone, is to request the permits through an agency or a local tourism association in Theth, Valbona, Plav or Pejë. They do it routinely for a small fee and send the documents by email. You print them and carry them with your passport. Start at least a month before you travel so you have margin. If you change your dates after applying, the permit has to be redone, so fix your itinerary before you request them.

Accommodation, food and how to book

You sleep in family houses in the mountain villages, and that is the purpose the trail was created for. The standard varies a great deal: some houses have rooms with private bathrooms, others have shared dormitories with mattresses and a bathroom outside.

The usual price is half board, twenty to thirty five euros a person with dinner and breakfast included. A packed lunch can normally be arranged for a small extra charge. The food is simple and plentiful: homemade cheese, pies, beans, baked meat, mountain tea.

Booking is done by telephone or through the agency handling your permits. On some stages there is only one house available, and in July and August it fills. Do not set off without confirmed bookings for every night.

The real budget and the money

It is a cheap trail by European standards, but there are a few costs people forget.

The kit and the mistakes that ruin the trip

No technical equipment is needed, but a few things are not negotiable.

Broken in boots with ankle support. The ground is stony and unstable on many descents.
An offline map and a GPS track on your phone. Waymarking exists but is uneven, and disappears in fog.
A power bank. Mains power is not constant everywhere.
Two litres of water minimum. There are no springs on the limestone ridges for hours at a time.
Layers and a waterproof. At two thousand metres it can snow even in July.
Cash in two currencies, in small notes.
A first aid kit with blister plasters, because blisters are problem number one.

The frequent mistakes are three: setting off without confirmed permits, underestimating the cumulative ascent, and having no booking for the stages with a single house. All three are solved by a month of preparation.

Season, access and shorter versions

The season is short: from mid June to the end of September. Before that the passes hold snow, and after the first half of October many houses close.

If you do not have twelve days, there are shorter versions that work very well. A three or four day loop through Theth, Valbona and Cerem covers the most spectacular Albanian stages. The Theth to Valbona stage on its own can be done in a day and needs no permits, because it stays within one country.

Përmet is a town of ten thousand people in southern Albania, set on the bank of the Vjosa, one of the last genuinely wild rivers in Europe. Twelve kilometres away, in a canyon, sit the thermal pools of Benja, with an Ottoman bridge above them. They are free, open around the clock, and unlike almost any other thermal site in Europe they have neither a gate nor a ticket office.

What the pools are like, when it is worth going, what the canyon above them is, what a wild river means and what to eat in town.

What Përmet is and why the detour pays

The town sits in a broad valley between mountains, on the right bank of the Vjosa. It is known locally as the town of roses and has a small centre with a square, a few cafes and a massive rock right in the middle, called the City Stone, which you climb by steps for the view.

For many it is not a destination in itself but a base for what is around it: the thermal springs, the canyon, the Kelcyra gorge and the fir forest at Hotova. It is worth a night in town rather than a stop, though, because the evening has a rhythm you miss if you are passing through.

It is more remote than it looks on the map. The roads of southern Albania are good but winding, and from either Gjirokastra or Korçë you are looking at around two hours.

The Benja thermal springs

They lie beside the village of Bënjë, about twelve kilometres from town, at the mouth of the Lengarica canyon. There are several stone pools, some natural and some roughly built, fed by sulphurous springs emerging from the bank.

The water sits at around twenty four to twenty eight degrees, so it is warm rather than hot. Worth knowing so you do not arrive expecting a spa.
The pools are free and permanently open, with no hours and no charge.
The Kadiu bridge, an Ottoman arched bridge, crosses above them and appears in every photograph.
There are no changing rooms. People change on the bank or in the car, and in summer there are improvised cubicles.
The cold river runs right beside the pools, which allows a hot and cold alternation.

When to go if you want quiet
In summer, at midday, the pools are full and lukewarm water impresses nobody when it is thirty five degrees outside. The good moment is early morning, before nine, or, far better, winter and the shoulder seasons, when the contrast between cold air and warm water actually works. Plenty of people come in November or March for exactly that reason. Bring rubber sandals, because the stones are slippery, and a towel you do not mind losing, since the sulphur leaves a smell.

From beside the bridge the canyon cut by the Lengarica river runs upstream, with limestone walls closing to within a few metres of each other. When the water is low you can wade up the bed, knee or waist deep, for a few hundred metres.

It is not a waymarked walk and it has no infrastructure. You wade through cold water over slippery stones, so footwear that can get wet and constant attention are needed. When the flow is high, in spring or after rain, you do not go in at all.

Guided tours are available, with equipment and explanation included. For anyone going independently the rule is simple: if the water is running fast and looks cloudy, stay out.

The Vjosa, the last wild river in Europe

The Vjosa runs free along almost its entire length, from its headwaters in Greece to the Adriatic, with no dams on the main channel. In Europe that has become an absolute rarity, and in March 2023 the river and its tributaries were declared a wild river national park, the first of its kind on the continent.

You can see what that means with the naked eye. The river has a braided bed, with many channels splitting and rejoining, and gravel banks that shift from year to year. An embanked river has a single straight channel. The difference is obvious from the first look off the bridge.

The decision followed years of campaigning against hydroelectric schemes planned along its course. For a visitor the practical effect is that you can see what a European river looked like before the twentieth century.

What to eat and what to take home

Përmet has a culinary reputation out of all proportion to its size. The local speciality is gliko, fruit slowly cooked in syrup and kept in jars: green walnuts, figs, sour cherries, melon rind. They are served with a small spoon alongside a glass of water, as a gesture of welcome.

There is also mountain cheese, honey, fruit raki and, in the town restaurants, river fish. Prices are low even by Albanian standards: a full meal costs around eight to twelve euros a head.

In the town market they sell jars of homemade gliko. It is the best souvenir from the area and it survives the journey, unlike cheese.

A car is the best answer. There are coaches between the larger towns but they do not reach Benja, and a taxi there and back with waiting time costs around fifteen to twenty euros negotiated. Accommodation in town is cheap, with guest houses from twenty five euros a night.

Korçë is a city of about seventy five thousand people in south eastern Albania, set on a plateau at eight hundred and fifty metres near the Greek border. It is called the little Paris, which sounds like an overstatement until you learn that the first school teaching in Albanian opened here, that it holds the finest icon collection in the country, and that the local beer has been brewed since 1928.

What to see in the city, why it matters to Albanian history, what to eat and drink, and what is worth an hour away.

Why Korçë is considered the cultural capital

In 1887 the first school teaching in the Albanian language opened here. That may sound like a minor detail, but in the Ottoman Empire of the time it was forbidden, and the language had no unified alphabet. The school building is now the National Museum of Education, and for Albanians the place has the standing of a national symbol.

The little Paris nickname comes from the interwar period, when the city had a prosperous middle class, trading links with central Europe and an urban way of life unusual for the region. It was also the first city in Albania with a cinema.

In August the beer festival takes over the city centre for five days, with concerts and long tables. It is the biggest event in the local calendar and fills every bed in town.

Voskopoja, the city that vanished

About twenty kilometres from the city lies the village of Voskopojë, which today has a few hundred residents. In the eighteenth century it was one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the Balkans, with an academy, a printing press, one of very few in the region, and dozens of churches.

The population was largely Aromanian, and the city functioned as a trading centre with links across central Europe. It was destroyed twice, in 1769 and 1788, and never recovered.

What remains is a handful of eighteenth century churches with remarkable frescoes inside and on the exterior porches. They are locked, and the key is asked for in the village, which means a visit depends on finding the right person. It is worth the effort, but go with realistic expectations about opening.

What else is nearby
Korçë is a good base for the south eastern corner. The village of Dardhë, twenty five kilometres away, is a small mountain resort used in winter. Lake Prespa, with the island of Maligrad and its rock church, is about an hour off. Ohrid, in North Macedonia, is reached in about an hour and a half across the border, which makes the city a logical stop on a longer Balkan route.

Its houses are made of stone and roofed with grey slate, which is why Albanians call it the stone city, and from a distance the whole hillside looks like one continuous roof.

The first construction dates from the twelfth century and it was extended repeatedly, most drastically in the nineteenth century under Ali Pasha. Inside there is a weapons museum, a gallery of captured artillery and, oddly, the wreck of an American reconnaissance aircraft forced down during the Cold War.

The old bazaar is the commercial heart of the town, originally built in the seventeenth century and rebuilt in the nineteenth after a fire destroyed it. The narrow streets, the stone paving and the workshops that still sell carved wood, carpets and stone objects make it the most photographed part of Gjirokaster.

The Blue Eye, Syri i Kalter, is the most spectacular of them: a karst spring about thirty-four kilometres away, forty-five minutes by car, where water rises from a depth nobody has yet measured to the bottom. The colour goes from deep blue at the centre to turquoise at the edges, and the water stays around ten degrees all year, which is why the swimming is brief and loud.

The ruins of Antigonea are the quieter option. The city was founded around 295 BC by Pyrrhus of Epirus, who named it after his wife, and was destroyed by the Romans a century and a half later. What survives is foundations and mosaics on a hilltop with a wide view, usually with nobody else there.

Berat is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Europe, with a history running back roughly two thousand four hundred years, and it is best known for a single image: hundreds of white Ottoman houses stacked up a steep hillside, each with rows of large windows facing the valley. Gorica and the river

On the opposite bank of the Osum, Gorica was traditionally the Christian quarter of the town. Founded in the sixteenth century, it offers the best views of Mangalem, for the simple reason that you cannot photograph a hillside while standing on it.

The two banks are joined by a stone bridge, originally wooden and rebuilt in stone in the eighteenth century. Crossing it in the morning and again at sunset gives you the two best light conditions of the day on the same walk.

The riverbanks themselves have been laid out as a promenade, and the reflection of the white houses in still water is the classic evening photograph. It also functions as the town social space: this is where Berat walks in the hour before dinner.

Berat is a town you explore on foot, but be prepared: the lanes in the old quarters are paved with smooth stone and the climb to the castle is steep enough to matter in summer heat. Shoes with grip are not optional.
