What Zagori is and why UNESCO listed it

The region lies in Epirus, north of the town of Ioannina, on the flanks of the Timfi massif. The name comes from a Slavic word meaning beyond the mountain, and the geography explains the rest: isolated villages at between eight hundred and twelve hundred metres, between which you could only travel on foot or by mule.

Illustrative image of a single arch stone bridge. Photo: Pexels

Under Ottoman rule the villages secured an unusual degree of fiscal and administrative autonomy, negotiating a single lump payment in exchange for the right to govern themselves. That produced a prosperous community and a merchant class who left for Russia, Romania and Egypt and sent money home.

That money built what you see today. The bridges carry the name of whoever paid for them, and so do the schools and churches. The 2023 inscription does not concern any single building but the whole landscape: the villages, the cobbled paths, the bridges and the way people organised vertical terrain.

The stone bridges, the signature of the region

There are several dozen, built between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with one, two or three arches, in dry stone without cement mortar. The arch carries the load into the banks, and some have stood for over two hundred and fifty years in beds that swell violently in spring.

The villages worth the most

There are forty six, and the difference between them is real: some have been restored and have guest houses, others have three residents in winter. These are the ones that repay the time.

Megalo and Mikro Papingo: the two villages under the Astraka walls, with limestone towers above them. The most visited and the best equipped.

Monodendri: the starting point for the descent into the gorge, with the Agia Paraskevi monastery clinging to the cliff.

Dilofo: nearly empty, no cars inside, the best preserved architecturally.

Kipoi: the village of the bridges, with the easiest access.

Vitsa: quiet, with a fine descent to the Misios bridge.

Tsepelovo: larger, a good base for the eastern half of the region.

Vradeto: the highest village at 1,340 metres, with the stone steps leading up to it.

The architecture is uniform and that is exactly what impresses: walls of local stone, roofs of slate slabs, enclosed courtyards, arched gateways. There is no whitewash and no blue. Anyone arriving with the Cyclades in mind has a moment of confusion.

The Vradeto steps and the cobbled paths

Before there was a road, the village of Vradeto was linked to the rest of the world by a stone stairway cut into the wall of a ravine, with roughly eleven hundred steps zigzagging up. It was built in the eighteenth century and was the only access for two hundred years.

Today the climb takes about forty minutes and the descent thirty, and from the top it is another half hour to the Beloi viewpoint, from which the whole Vikos gorge opens up vertically. It is the best short outing in the region.

What to know about the kalderimia
The old cobbled paths, called kalderimia, still link the villages and are waymarked as trails. The stone has been polished by centuries of use and turns slippery at the least damp, including morning dew. Boots with good grip are not fussiness, and poles help on the descent. In summer set off early, because the south facing slopes have no shade at all after ten.

When to come and what changes with the season

Zagori is not a summer destination in the Greek sense. It is a mountain region with a real winter and snow that closes roads.

Each bridge carries the name of whoever paid for it. Photo: Pexels

April and May: the water is at its highest, the waterfalls run, the villages are empty. The best time for photography.

June and September: the best balance of weather and crowds. Ideal for walking.

July and August: hot and busy, especially at weekends. Book accommodation ahead.

October: autumn colour, with beech forest on the slopes. Underrated.

Winter: snow, fireplaces, roads occasionally closed. A different region entirely.

The temperature difference from the coast is large. In August, when it is thirty five degrees at the sea, it drops to fifteen here at night. Bring a warm layer whatever the month.

A car is the only realistic solution. The roads are surfaced but narrow and winding, and two villages that look adjacent on the map can be half an hour apart, because a whole valley has to be driven round. Do not judge by straight line distance.

Accommodation is in guest houses converted from old stone buildings, at sixty to a hundred and twenty euros a night, more than you would expect in rural Greece but to a good standard. The World Heritage inscription is described by UNESCO, and regional information by the Greek national tourism organisation.

The walk along its floor is the best day hike on the Greek mainland.

Why the Vikos gorge holds the record and what it means

The record is for the ratio of depth to width, not for raw depth. The walls reach around nine hundred metres, and at the narrowest point the opening at the top is about eleven hundred metres, dropping to a hundred metres at the base. By comparison, much deeper canyons are also much wider, so they read as valleys rather than slots.

Illustrative image. The record is the depth to width ratio. Photo: Pexels

In practice that means from above you see the opposite wall almost vertically, and from below the sky is a strip. That is the only thing that matters to anyone standing there, beyond the technical argument about how a canyon is measured.

The gorge sits inside the Vikos-Aoos national park, established in 1973, and runs about twenty kilometres, of which the main walkable section is around twelve.

The full walk, step by step

The classic version starts at Monodendri and comes out at the village of Vikos or, on the longer variant, at Papingo. It is one way only, which means you need a plan for getting back.

Illustrative image of a wooded slope. Photo: Pexels

The descent from Monodendri: about forty minutes down steep cobbled switchbacks. This is the hardest part on the knees.

The gorge floor: six to seven kilometres among boulders and woodland, waymarked on the rocks. The ground is uneven, not a smooth path.

The Voidomatis springs: where the water surfaces, in green blue pools. Many people stop here for a long break.

The climb to Vikos village: about forty minutes, or the long variant to Papingo, adding two hours and a serious ascent.

Woodland covers the whole gorge floor, right up to the walls. Photo: Pexels

Total: five to seven hours for the Monodendri to Vikos version, depending on pace and stops. It is not technical, but it is long and tiring, and the terrain demands constant attention to where you put your feet.

    How to solve the return
The route is not circular. The most common solutions are a taxi booked in advance at the exit point, costing thirty to fifty euros back to the start, or two cars left at either end if you travel in two vehicles. Guest houses in the area arrange transfers and that is the simplest option. Do not set off without knowing how you will get back: there is no public transport at the gorge exit and no phone signal along most of the route.

The viewpoints, if you would rather not descend

The best image of the gorge is not from below but from above. If you do not have six hours or the fitness for the walk, two points give you nearly all of it.

The Oxya viewpoint, near Monodendri: drive almost to the edge, then a few steps. The easiest panorama.

The Beloi viewpoint, above Vradeto village: about thirty minutes on foot across a plateau, with a head on vertical view. The most dramatic.

The Agia Paraskevi monastery at Monodendri: clinging to the cliff, with a narrow path cut into the rock continuing beyond it.

The viewpoint at Vikos village: looking in from the lower end, with the gorge opening up ahead.

Combining the Vradeto steps with the Beloi viewpoint is the best half day in the region and requires no particular fitness.

The water, the part that catches everyone out

The Voidomatis river, which runs through the gorge, is reckoned among the cleanest in Europe. The unexpected part is that in summer the bed inside the gorge is dry at the surface. The water travels through the limestone and only emerges at the springs near the lower end.

The Vikos-Aoos national park was established in 1973. Photo: Pexels

That has two practical consequences. First: do not count on water along the route, carry at least two litres a person, three in summer. Second: if you want to see the river running, come in spring, when the flow is at its maximum and the gorge looks entirely different.

The Timfi massif dominates the gorge from the north. Photo: Pexels

On the lower section, downstream of the springs, there is gentle rafting and swimming. The water sits at around ten degrees all year, which is a genuine shock rather than a figure of speech.

When you can go and what the risks are

The usable season is April to October. Outside it the route becomes dangerous, from ice on the cobbled sections and from high water.

In summer the bed inside the gorge is often dry at the surface. Photo: Pexels

In spring, in April and May, the water can make some crossings difficult, and after heavy rain the route closes temporarily. Summer is hot and shadeless on the ascent and descent, though the gorge floor stays cool. September and October are the safest months.

The real risks are three: rockfall from the walls, especially in spring, the unstable ground on the gorge floor where you step from boulder to boulder, and the absence of phone signal. Do not go alone, tell your guest house what time you expect to come out, and set off early so you are not caught by darkness inside.

Stay in one of the Zagori villages, most conveniently Monodendri or Papingo. Many guest houses offer a package with a transfer and an early breakfast, aimed precisely at walkers. Booking ahead is necessary for weekends in September and October.

Conclusion

The Vikos gorge earns its record not through the depth figure but through proportion: near vertical walls a few hundred metres apart, a strip of sky above and a river that only appears at the exit.

Set off early, arrange your return before you descend, carry more water than you think you need, and if you do not have six hours, walk up to Beloi instead.

Why Thessaloniki is the food capital of Greece

The explanation is historical. After 1922 the population exchange with Turkey brought hundreds of thousands of Greek refugees from Asia Minor into the city, arriving with recipes, spices and techniques entirely unlike those of southern Greece. Layered on top of that are the Sephardic Jewish and Ottoman traditions.

Bougatsa: filo pastry with custard, cheese or minced meat, eaten in the morning. The specialist shops have queues at eight.

Koulouri: the sesame bread ring sold on every corner, the cheapest breakfast in Greece.

Souvlaki and gyros: bigger portions and lower prices than Athens, with places open late into the night.

Mezedopoleia: places where you order many small plates and drink tsipouro. This is the standard way to have dinner here.

Trigona Panoramatos: pastry cones filled with custard, invented in the Panorama suburb.

The Modiano and Kapani markets: food halls, the first recently renovated, both with tables where you eat on the spot.

Tsipouro is the drink of the city, a pomace spirit served cold in small bottles, always with food. It is drunk slowly over a couple of hours and the order arrives in waves. It is not a shot.

The layers: Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman

The city was founded in 315 BC by Cassander, who named it after his wife, the half sister of Alexander the Great. It has never been abandoned since, and the result is that digging for any underground car park turns into an archaeological site.

The fire of 1917 and the city that vanished

In August 1917 a fire that started in a kitchen burned through the city centre for thirty two hours and destroyed roughly a third of the built area. Over seventy thousand people were left without homes, most of them from the Jewish community.

Reconstruction followed a modern plan of wide boulevards and squares, drawn up by the French architect Ernest Hébrard. Aristotelous Square, opening onto the sea, is the most visible part of that plan. The side effect was that the Ottoman city disappeared almost completely.

What survived is Ano Poli, the Upper Town, the hillside quarter of crooked lanes, Ottoman houses with overhanging upper storeys and the Byzantine walls. It is the only place where you can see what Thessaloniki looked like before, and the view from the Heptapyrgion fortress takes in the whole bay.

The city once called the Jerusalem of the Balkans

For nearly four centuries Thessaloniki had a Jewish majority. The community arrived after the expulsion from Spain in 1492, spoke Ladino, a language derived from medieval Spanish, and dominated the port to such an extent that it closed on Saturdays. The city was known as the Mother of Israel.

In 1943 the German occupation deported around fifty thousand Jews from the city to Auschwitz. Over ninety five per cent did not return. The community today numbers a few hundred people.

You can visit the Jewish Museum in the centre, housed in one of the few buildings that survived the fire, and the memorial in Eleftherias Square, from where the deportations departed. The old cemetery, with around three hundred thousand graves, was destroyed in 1942, and the university campus now stands on the site, with a memorial plaque.

The quarters and how to walk them

The city is organised in strips parallel to the sea, which makes orientation simple: the further up you go, the further back in time.

Construction began in 1986 and only finished recently, because every station hit an archaeological layer. The result is unusual: some stations function as museums, with remains displayed in situ, exactly where they were found. Venizelou station is worth going down to even if you have nowhere to travel.

Thessaloniki has been built over itself for two thousand three hundred years, with Roman monuments in the basements of metro stations and a cuisine drawn from three traditions that all arrived here as refugees.

Give it two or three days, eat at the mezedopoleia rather than on the waterfront, walk up to Ano Poli towards evening, and leave one morning free for queuing for bougatsa.

What Pelion is and how it divides

Mount Pelion rises to 1,624 metres along a curved peninsula that encloses the Pagasetic gulf. That creates two entirely different coasts, twenty minutes apart by car.

The villages sit on the slope, hundreds of metres above the water. Photo: Pexels

The west coast, facing the gulf, has calm water, small shingle beaches and fishing villages. The east coast, facing the Aegean, has broad beaches of sand and white pebble, waves, cliffs and open views. If you want a proper beach, go east. If you want still water with small children, stay west.

The surprising part is how green it is. Pelion gets more rainfall than almost anywhere else on the Greek mainland, has streams that run all year and dense forest of beech, chestnut and plane. In August you can go from thirty five degrees on the beach to twenty two in the woods in twenty minutes.

The centaurs, Chiron and the Argonauts

In Greek mythology Pelion was centaur country, and the best known of them, Chiron, was the exception: wise, a healer and a teacher. He educated Achilles, Jason and Asclepius, the god of medicine. His cave is traditionally placed somewhere on the eastern slope.

The houses have stone ground floors and timber upper storeys. Photo: Pexels

The Argonaut story begins here too. Jason sailed from Iolcos, the ancient port on the site of present day Volos, in a ship built from Pelion timber. In the modern harbour there is a replica of the Argo, built to ancient techniques, which has actually sailed.

The wedding of Peleus and Thetis, from which the Trojan war followed by way of the apple of discord, is also set on Pelion. In short, the local mythology is dense and, unlike many places in Greece, attached to the landscape itself: the forest, the cave, the harbour.

The villages worth visiting

There are twenty four, built at between three hundred and eight hundred metres, never right on the shore. The reason is historical: piracy and malaria in the low ground.

Makrinitsa: called the balcony of Pelion, with a square hanging over the gulf. The most visited and the busiest at weekends.

Portaria: next door to Makrinitsa, larger, with waterfalls and trails starting from the village.

Vizitsa: the best preserved architecturally, with stone mansions turned into guest houses.

Milies: the upper terminus of the historic railway, with an old library and a square under plane trees.

Tsagarada: spread across four quarters, with a plane tree over a thousand years old in the Agia Paraskevi square.

Zagora: the largest, known for its firiki apples and its orchards.

Agios Ioannis: the only proper resort on the east coast.

The architecture is distinctive: a ground floor of heavy stone, a timber upper storey projecting outwards, a roof of slate slabs, and in the wealthier houses, painted ceilings. It is the closest thing in Greece to alpine building.

The beaches on the east coast

The best beaches are on the Aegean side, and getting to them is the part that catches people out: tight switchback roads dropping seven or eight hundred metres in a few kilometres.

Mylopotamos: two coves linked by a natural arch through the rock. The most photographed on the peninsula.

Fakistra: small, hidden, reached down a footpath. Many consider it the finest.

Papa Nero and Agios Ioannis: long, with facilities, suited to a whole day.

Damouchari: the only natural harbour cove on the east coast, with pebbles and deep water.

Horefto: a long sand beach, good for families.

Potistika and Paltsi: in the south, large and almost empty, with waves.

    About the roads, seriously
The roads of Pelion are among the most demanding on the Greek mainland. They are surfaced but narrow, with hairpin after hairpin and large height differences. The realistic average is thirty kilometres an hour, sometimes less. Twenty kilometres on the map means forty minutes of driving, not twenty. Anyone prone to car sickness will feel every bend, and an automatic gearbox helps a great deal. Do not plan three beaches in a day, plan one.

The Moutzouris train and the walking routes

The narrow gauge line between Ano Lechonia and Milies was built between 1895 and 1903, and the engineer who designed it was Evaristo de Chirico, father of the painter Giorgio de Chirico. It still runs in season, over about fifteen kilometres in roughly an hour and a half, across metal bridges spanning ravines.

It generally operates at weekends and through the summer months, and tickets sell out. Check the current timetable in advance, because it changes year to year and services are sometimes suspended for works.

The other movement legacy is the kalderimia, the cobbled mule paths that linked the villages before there were roads. Many have been restored and waymarked, and the route from Tsagarada down to Damouchari beach, or the one between Milies and Vizitsa, take one to two hours through woodland.

The best strategy is to sleep on the coast you actually want. Moving from one side to the other every day eats hours. In summer, August is full of Greek holidaymakers, and at weekends the northern villages fill with day trippers from Volos and Thessaloniki.

Pelion is where Greece looks least like Greece: beech forest above Aegean beaches, houses with timber upper storeys, and a narrow gauge railway designed by the father of a surrealist painter.

Pick one coast to sleep on, budget the driving at thirty kilometres an hour, walk at least one of the old cobbled routes, and come in June or September.

The three peninsulas of Halkidiki, briefly

Kassandra is the western one, the most developed, with resorts, beach bars and the easiest access. Sithonia is the middle one, wilder, greener, with small bays and far less building. Athos is the eastern one, and it is a monastic state that women cannot enter at all.

All three are within two hours of Thessaloniki airport, which is why the region fills with visitors from across the Balkans every July and August.

Kassandra: resorts and nightlife

The first peninsula is the busiest and the most organised. Beaches are long, sandy and lined with sunbeds, the water is shallow and warm, and the resorts have everything a package holiday needs.

Kallithea and Pefkohori have the nightlife, Sani has the expensive hotels and a marina, and Afytos is the one traditional village on the peninsula, built in stone on a cliff above the sea.

Sithonia: wild coves and turquoise water

The middle peninsula has the better scenery by a clear margin. Pine forest runs down to the water, the coast is cut into small bays and there is far less concrete. The road around it is one of the best drives in northern Greece.

Kalamitsi, Kavourotrypes and Karydi are the bays people come for: white rock, clear water and, in the case of Kavourotrypes, no facilities at all. Vourvourou and Porto Koufo, the largest natural harbour in Greece, are the anchorages.

Mount Athos

The third peninsula is an autonomous monastic state within Greece, with twenty monasteries and about two thousand monks. It has been self governing since 883 and it operates on Byzantine time and the Julian calendar.

Entry is restricted. Men need a permit, the diamonitirion, issued in limited daily numbers and applied for well in advance. Women have been forbidden to enter since a decree of 1046, a rule that has been challenged and remains in force.

For everyone else there are boat trips along the coast from Ouranoupoli, which stay 500 metres offshore and let you see the monasteries from the water. That is the realistic option for most visitors.

If you want a resort holiday with everything on site, take Kassandra. If you want to drive to a different bay every day and swim off white rock, take Sithonia.

Getting there and practical advice

Thessaloniki is the gateway: the airport is about an hour from the start of Kassandra and two hours from the middle of Sithonia. Buses run to the main resorts, but a car is what makes the region work, particularly on Sithonia.

June and September are the best months. Thessaloniki itself is worth two days on the way in or out. Background is on Wikipedia and official information at the Greek tourism board.
