People did not move them out of the way, because they could not. They built between them, under them and sometimes directly on them, and some houses use a single stone weighing hundreds of tonnes as their entire roof. This is not a reconstruction for visitors, it is how people lived here for centuries.

What Monsanto actually looks like

The village climbs a granite slope to roughly 750 metres, and the boulders are everywhere: in yards, in the middle of streets, inside the walls of houses. The local solution was pragmatic. Where a stone blocked the way, they built around it. Where a stone was large and flat, it became a roof. Where two sat side by side, they walled the gap and got a room.

Illustrative image. The granite blocks reach several metres across. Photo: Pexels

The result is a village where it is hard to say where the geology ends and the architecture begins. The most photographed house has a single boulder as its complete roof, with no structure underneath it at all.

The material is the same throughout: grey granite, sometimes whitewashed inside. Windows are small and doors low, and a few doorways carry carved Manueline surrounds from the sixteenth century, a sign that the village was once prosperous.

The hilltop castle and the explosion that destroyed it

Above the village, on the ridge, stand the ruins of a castle granted to the Templar order in the twelfth century by the first king of Portugal. The position explains everything: from here the whole plain is visible into Spain, and this was contested frontier country for centuries.

A chapel built directly onto the rock, inside the village. Photo: Pexels

The castle did not fall in battle. In the nineteenth century its munitions store exploded and destroyed much of the walls. What remains is fragments of curtain wall, cisterns cut into the rock, and anthropomorphic graves carved directly into the granite, older than the castle itself.

Illustrative image of a granite slope. Photo: Pexels

The climb from the village takes twenty to thirty minutes on a steep cobbled path. It is not technical, but it needs decent footwear, because the stone has been polished smooth by use and is slippery.

The siege legend and the silver cockerel

The local story says the village was besieged at length, and that when supplies had almost run out the villagers threw their last calf over the walls, stuffed with the last of the grain. The besiegers concluded there was food in abundance inside and gave up. The motif appears in many places across Europe, but here it is still marked every year.

Every third of May the women of the village climb onto the castle walls and throw clay pots filled with flowers down from them. It is one of the few festivals in Portugal that still keeps the original gesture rather than just the memory of it.

The second symbol of the village is a silver cockerel. In 1938, in a competition run by the regime of the day, Monsanto was declared the most Portuguese village in Portugal, and the prize was a silver cockerel placed on the tower in the village. The original is kept in the village and a replica stands on the tower.

The local craft is the marafona, a cloth doll built on two crossed sticks, with no face. It was placed under a bride pillow or kept in the house as a protective charm, particularly against storms. It has no face for a practical reason that hardened into tradition: it was made from scraps of clothing by women who had no time for detail. It is sold in the village and is the only souvenir here that means anything.

What else there is nearby

Monsanto belongs to a network of twelve historic villages in the Portuguese interior, most of them former fortified frontier posts. They are close enough together that you can link three or four into a two day route.

Idanha-a-Velha: twelve kilometres away, a village built over the ruins of a Roman town, with an early Christian basilica and inscribed stones reused in the walls.

Penha Garcia: with a gorge where trilobite fossils are visible in the rock face, on a waymarked trail.

Sortelha: a walled village on a rocky spur, with intact ramparts and as many granite blocks as Monsanto.

Castelo Novo and Belmonte: the second with a Jewish community that survived in hiding for centuries.

The Alqueva Dark Sky reserve to the south, one of the first areas in the world certified for night sky viewing.

This is one of the most depopulated regions in Portugal. That means empty roads and quiet, but also that services are thin: fill the tank when you can and do not count on a restaurant being open after ten at night.

How the visit actually works

Cars do not go up into the upper village. You park at the entrance and walk, on streets that are really stone steps, climbing continuously. It is a physically tiring village, and in wet weather it turns slippery.

The streets are narrow, steep and impossible by car. Photo: Pexels

In summer, temperatures in the Portuguese interior regularly pass forty degrees, and the granite holds the heat into the night. Visit early in the morning or towards evening, never at midday in July or August.

The village was used as a location for a hugely successful television series, which brought a wave of visitors and visibly changed the weekends. Midweek and out of season, though, it remains a very quiet village of a few hundred people.

Public transport here is infrequent and awkward, so a car is the realistic answer. The road from Castelo Branco is good, and the final stretch climbs in wide switchbacks. The car park at the village entrance fills up on summer weekends.

Sleeping in the village changes the visit entirely: once the day trips leave, it empties, and in the evening you can see all the way into Spain. The historic village network is described by the association that runs it, and general travel information by the national tourist board.

What Peneda-Gerês is and how it divides up

The park is shaped like a horseshoe opening westwards and divides by name into two massifs, Peneda in the north and Gerês in the south, with Soajo and Amarela between them. It is continuous with a Spanish park across the border, and together they form a biosphere reserve recognised by UNESCO since 2009.

Granite breaks the surface everywhere on the high plateaux. Photo: Pexels

The relief is granite, with high plateaux, rounded blocks and deep valleys carrying water all year. The rain is the part nobody warns you about: this is among the wettest areas in the Iberian peninsula, which explains the green, the waterfalls and the moss on every surface.

It matters to say from the start that this is not an American style park with a gate and a single visitor centre. It is inhabited territory, with villages, roads, farms and dams inside it. Some zones are strict reserve and entirely off limits, others are ordinary villages where people are simply getting on with things.

The waterfalls and what changed about reaching them

There are dozens, and most have no sign at all from the road. The best known is the Arado waterfall, which drops in steps into a pool at the bottom, on a forest track above the village of Gerês.

Other frequented spots are Portela do Homem, on the border, where the river forms natural pools between granite blocks, Fecha de Barjas, known locally as the Tahiti waterfall, and Poco Azul. All of them require a steep and slippery descent on foot.

The crowds of recent years have brought real restrictions: parking has been capped at some falls, bathing has been banned or limited at others during certain periods, and vehicle access on some forest tracks is controlled in summer. On top of that, on days of high fire risk roads and trails close, sometimes overnight. Do not rely on old information from blogs, check the current situation before you leave. The fines are issued, not merely threatened.

The Geira Romana, a Roman road with its milestones in place

The Roman road linking Braga to Astorga, built in the first century, ran through the middle of what is now the park. The remarkable part is not the route itself but the fact that along the valley of the Homem river dozens of milestones survive, cylindrical stones that marked the distances, many still in their original position.

Aceredo, the Spanish village drowned by a dam, a few kilometres from the border. Photo: Pexels

It is one of the greatest concentrations of Roman milestones anywhere in the world. Some still carry legible inscriptions naming the emperors under whom the road was repaired. You walk past them on an easy path, and the experience is oddly direct: they are not in a museum and not fenced off, they are simply there, in the woods.

One section of the road lies under water, in the reservoir built in the seventies, and reappears when the level drops.

The granite villages and the granaries on stilts

The strongest image in the park is not a waterfall but a group of stone structures raised on short pillars and lined up on a granite platform. They are called espigueiros and they are maize granaries: the stone keeps the rain out, the slits let air circulate, and the wide discs on the pillars stop rodents climbing up.

Photo: Pexels

There are two main groups. At Soajo, twenty four espigueiros stand on a granite slab in the middle of the village, the oldest from the eighteenth century. At Lindoso, around fifty are lined up directly below the castle, forming an image that is unsettlingly like a graveyard, because each one carries a stone cross on top.

Both villages also have a medieval castle, and Lindoso preserves terraced fields visible from above. Castro Laboreiro, in the north, adds a third castle and the breed of dog that carries its name.

The drowned village and the one across the border

In 1972 the village of Vilarinho da Furna was flooded by a dam. It had a peculiarity that had made it famous even before that: a system of communal property and decision making in which land, water and labour were administered collectively by an assembly of villagers. Anthropologists studied it before it went under.

When drought lowers the reservoir the ruins reappear: walls, lanes, the outlines of houses. It is not something you can plan for, it depends entirely on the hydrological year, but it has happened several times in recent decades.

The same thing has an equivalent just across the border a few kilometres away, where a Spanish village drowned by the Alto Lindoso dam surfaces under the same conditions, with its bridge, its road and its houses. The two stories are essentially one story, cut in half by a frontier.

The free roaming animals and what that means for you

Garrano horses move freely through the park, a small, very old local breed, alongside cachena and barrosa cattle whose horns are far larger than the size of the animal would suggest. All of them have owners, even though they graze unsupervised.

Illustrative image. Garrano horses roam loose through the park. Photo: Pexels

The park also holds one of the few remaining Iberian wolf populations in Portugal. The chance of seeing one is close to zero, but their presence explains why shepherds still keep mastiffs and why some areas close during the breeding season.

In practice this means three things for a visitor: drive slowly, because animals stand in the road and will not move for you, do not feed the horses, and do not approach cattle with calves, because they turn aggressive.

The village of Gerês, a small spa town, is the most practical base for the south, with rooms, restaurants and quick access to the falls. For the north, Soajo and Lindoso are far quieter and closer to the espigueiros and the trails. The road between the two halves of the park takes a long way round, so do not underestimate the driving time.

Access rules, restricted zones and official trails are published by the Portuguese nature conservation institute, and the transboundary biosphere reserve status is described by UNESCO.

Peneda-Gerês is not an empty wilderness but land lived in for thousands of years, where a Roman road, stone granaries on stilts, a drowned village and the Iberian wolf fit inside one perimeter.

What the Aldeias do Xisto are and how they were saved

Schist is a layered metamorphic rock that splits naturally into slabs. In the mountains of central Portugal it lies at the surface everywhere, and people built with it simply because it was free and close to hand. Walls went up without mortar, slab on slab, and the roofs were made of the same material.

The result is villages of a single uniform colour, a grey brown that seems to grow out of the slope. There is no contrast and no render, and from a distance they merge into the rock. Only the churches are whitewashed, precisely so that they can be picked out.

The rural exodus emptied them. Between the fifties and the seventies people left for Lisbon, Coimbra or emigration to France, and some villages reached zero inhabitants. The recovery programme, launched in 2001 with regional development funding, rebuilt the houses, brought in power and water and turned part of the stock into guest accommodation. Twenty seven villages now belong to the network.

The villages worth the most

They are spread across four districts, which means you cannot do them all. They do cluster geographically, though, and two clusters cover the essentials.

Piodao: the best known and the most photogenic, in the Serra do Acor. The houses climb the slope in an amphitheatre and the windows and doors are painted blue. The local explanation is that for a long time the village shop stocked no other colour of paint.

Talasnal: in the Serra da Lousa, almost fully restored, with small restaurants and rooms in schist houses. You walk in from the car park below.

Casal Novo and Chiqueiro: neighbours of Talasnal, smaller and quieter, linked to it by footpaths.

Cerdeira: a village turned into an artists community, with workshops, courses and summer events.

Candal: the easiest of the Lousa cluster, with a surfaced road right into the village.

Janeiro de Cima: on the bank of the Zezere, different from the rest, with rounded river stones set into the walls.

The Serra da Lousa cluster, about forty minutes from Coimbra, is the easiest to visit: five villages within a few kilometres of each other, linked by waymarked paths. Piodao is more isolated and needs a separate trip up a road of switchbacks.

River beaches, the part nobody sees coming

Almost every village has a river beach a few hundred metres away. It is a Portuguese concept worth explaining: a mountain stream is lightly dammed, a pool of a few dozen metres forms, and the bank is laid out with sand or wooden decking.

Many have changing rooms, a lifeguard in the peak months and a bar. They are free, they are clean, and in the depth of a Portuguese summer, when the valley floor hits forty degrees, they are exactly why everyone drives up into the mountains.

What to know about the water
The water comes straight off the mountain and stays cold all year, somewhere around sixteen to eighteen degrees even in August. Getting in is a shock, and the deeper pools do not always have a lifeguard. Check the signs: some river beaches have monitored water quality displayed, others do not. Never jump from the rocks, because the depth shifts from year to year with the gravel.

Walking between the villages

The best way to understand the region is to link two or three villages on foot. The paths have existed for centuries, because they were the only connection between settlements, and they are now waymarked and maintained.

The streets are really staircases, and luggage is carried by hand. Photo: Pexels

The classic loop in the Serra da Lousa starts from the town of Lousa, climbs to Talasnal, continues to Casal Novo and Chiqueiro and drops back down. It runs ten to fifteen kilometres depending on the variant, with serious ascent, because the villages sit at different heights on the same slope.

Illustrative image from the mountains of central Portugal. Photo: Pexels

The paths are cobbled with uneven steps and turn slippery in the damp. Proper boots are not fussiness. In summer you set off early, because the south facing slopes become an oven after eleven.

In June 2017 the region was hit by the deadliest wildfire in Portuguese history, around Pedrogao Grande. Sixty six people died, most of them caught on a country road while trying to escape. Some of the schist villages were directly affected and others escaped narrowly.

The structural cause is well known and openly discussed in Portugal: the vast eucalyptus plantations grown for the paper industry burn extremely fast and turn an ordinary fire into one that cannot be stopped. Land abandoned after the rural exodus made it worse, because nobody was clearing the undergrowth any more.

Stricter rules on clearing land around houses and a better alert system followed. For a visitor this practically means that on days of extreme risk some roads and trails close, and open fires are banned outright. Check the situation before you go if you are travelling in August.

Public transport between the villages effectively does not exist. A car is essential, and the roads are narrow, tightly wound and often have rock fallen onto the surface after rain. You drive slowly and sound the horn briefly before blind bends, exactly as the locals do.

Accommodation is in restored schist houses, stone walled inside and usually with a fireplace. The number of beds in each village is small, and in August and on long weekends they fill completely. The full network is described by the association that runs the programme, and regional information by the central Portugal tourist board.

What Costa Vicentina is and why it looks nothing like the Algarve

The full name of the protected area is the Natural Park of the South West Alentejo and the Vicentine Coast. It runs from Porto Covo in the Alentejo down to Burgau, already inside the Algarve, and covers both the shoreline and a strip of land behind it.

The natural park covers roughly 110 kilometres of shoreline. Photo: Pexels

The difference from the tourist Algarve, an hour to the east, is obvious immediately. There the beaches have hotels, concrete stairways and sun loungers. Here you reach the beach down a dirt track, park on unmarked ground and walk down a path. Not because nobody wanted to build, but because nobody is allowed to.

The Alentejo coast, the least built up in southern Europe. Photo: Pexels

The coast faces west and south west, fully exposed to the Atlantic. That explains everything that follows: the big waves, the cold water, the wind, and the fact that very few beaches here suit a relaxed swim with children.

The beaches worth the drive

There are dozens, and most of them look good. What separates them is the access, the shelter from the wind, and whether there is anything to eat nearby.

Praia de Odeceixe: the most unusual on the coast. The Seixe river empties into the middle of it, so you get warm fresh water on one side and cold ocean on the other. The best option with small children.

Praia da Amoreira: another estuary beach, less crowded than Odeceixe, with big dunes behind it.

Praia da Arrifana: a half circle bay under a high cliff, with a small village above. A reference surf spot.

Praia do Amado: broad and straight, the most used by surf schools.

Praia da Bordeira: enormous, with a lagoon behind it that fills in winter. Almost empty even in August.

Zambujeira do Mar: a village with a beach under the cliff and concrete steps, one of the few with any infrastructure.

Praia do Carvalhal: in the north of the park, long and easy to reach, good for a long walk.

Nearly all of them follow the same pattern: a dirt car park, a path or a wooden stairway, sand, and nothing else. Bring water and food, because often there is nothing within ten kilometres.

Surfing: where, when and with what

This is one of the most consistent surf coasts in Europe, because it picks up Atlantic swell almost year round. That is also exactly why it is not a coast for casual swimming.

Photo: Pexels

Arrifana: a sheltered bay, good for beginners when the swell is small and difficult when it builds.

Amado and Bordeira: the two most used by schools, with the wave breaking over sand.

Carrapateira: the base village for surfers, with schools, board hire and cheap accommodation.

Odeceixe: gentler waves, suitable for a first lesson.

What to know before you get in
The ocean stays between sixteen and nineteen degrees all year, so a wetsuit is not optional even in August. Rip currents here are strong and real, and most beaches inside the park have no lifeguards outside the peak months. Do not go in alone, do not go in on an unflagged beach without experience, and ask at the local surf school what the conditions are that day. Every year brings accidents, generally to people who underestimated the current.

The Rota Vicentina, the trail that follows the cliff

The waymarked trail network in the region splits into two main routes with quite different characters. Together they run to over seven hundred kilometres once the shorter loops are counted in.

The Fishermen’s Trail hugs the cliff edge, on the paths used by the men who climb down after shellfish. It runs for roughly 230 kilometres in stages of 13 to 22 kilometres, and most of it is on sand, which means twice the effort of an ordinary path. There is no shade at all.

New building is tightly restricted inside the park. Photo: Pexels

The Historical Way runs inland through villages, eucalyptus plantations and cork oak. It is easier, shadier and less spectacular, but it stays walkable on windy days, when the coast turns unpleasant.

Both are properly waymarked and both have paid baggage transfer between stages, which changes the experience entirely. Many village guest houses work directly with the transfer companies.

Sagres and the south western corner of Europe

At the southern end of the coast, the headland at Sagres and Cape St Vincent mark the south westernmost point of mainland Europe. This is where the west coast meets the south coast, and the difference between them registers at once: wind and swell on one side, calmer water on the other.

The Sagres fortress, on a headland that is never out of the wind. Photo: Pexels

The fortress at Sagres occupies a flat, wind scoured headland with an enormous compass rose laid out on the ground. The legend of Henry the Navigator running a school of navigation here is largely a later construction, but the site genuinely was a strategic point for Atlantic voyages.

The lighthouse at Cape St Vincent is one of the most powerful in Europe. People gather at sunset, and by tradition grilled sausage is sold in the car park. It is the only place in the whole park where you will find reliable crowds.

What there is to see beyond the beaches

The coast is an important migration corridor, and spring and autumn bring birds in numbers. There is one detail here, though, that occurs nowhere else on earth: white storks nest directly on sea stacks off this coast, rather than on chimneys or poles. The best place to see it is around Cabo Sardão during the nesting season.

The second unusual thing is the harvesting of percebes, the goose barnacles that grow clamped to rock in the wave zone. They are collected by hand, on ropes down the cliff, between waves. It is one of the most dangerous jobs in Portugal, and the restaurant price reflects exactly that.

The dune vegetation is fragile and protected. The wooden boardwalks are not there for your comfort but because footsteps across the sand binding plants destroy a dune within a few years.

The wind deserves a separate explanation. In summer a northerly known locally as the nortada gets up almost daily around midday and blows hard until evening. It is not a breeze, it is a wind that lifts the sand and ruins your afternoon on the beach. That is why locals prefer May, June and September, when the sea is just as good and the air is still.

Accommodation is in small guest houses, holiday cottages and a few eco campsites. There are no large hotels, and in July and August everything books months ahead. Trail details are published by the association that maintains the Rota Vicentina, and the park boundaries and rules by the Portuguese nature conservation institute.

Costa Vicentina is proof that good protective legislation works: roughly 110 kilometres of Atlantic coast left almost unbuilt, in a southern Europe where that hardly exists any more.

Come in May, June or September to miss the afternoon wind, bring a car, carry water and food to the beach, and treat the ocean with respect, because it does not forgive.

Funchal in 2 days, and why the city is vertical

The city holds about 110,000 people on slopes running from sea level to around 1,200 metres, which means every walk is either up or down. The bay is deep enough that cruise ships dock in the centre, and on a busy day three of them arrive at once.

That vertical geography is why the cable car exists, and why the roads above town are a continuous sequence of hairpins.

Day 1: Monte, the gardens and the sledges

Take the cable car from the seafront up to Monte, about fifteen minutes and 550 metres of climb, with the whole city below you the entire way. It replaced a rack railway that closed in 1943 after a boiler explosion.

At the top are two gardens. Monte Palace is the theatrical one: koi ponds, Japanese sections, tiles and a collection of African sculpture. The Botanical Garden, reached by a second cable car, is the serious one, with the endemic Madeiran plants.

The wicker toboggan

The way down from Monte is a wicker basket on wooden runners, steered and braked by two men in white with straw hats using their rubber soled boots. It runs about two kilometres down the public road, at up to 30 kilometres an hour.

It started in the 1850s as genuine transport for residents going into town and became a tourist attraction when the residents got cars. It is not cheap for the distance, it ends halfway down the hill, and almost everyone is glad they did it.

Day 2: the market, the old town and the wine

The Mercado dos Lavradores is a 1940s market building with tiled panels, flower sellers at the entrance, an exotic fruit hall and a fish market downstairs where they sell espada, the black scabbard fish that lives at 1,500 metres and looks like it.

Levada walks start within twenty minutes of the centre. Photo: Pexels

Be aware that the fruit sellers upstairs offer samples and then quote a very high price for a small bag. Ask the price first and be prepared to walk away. That is the single most common complaint visitors have about Funchal.

Zona Velha and the painted doors

The old town at the eastern end of the seafront had become derelict, and in 2010 an art project invited artists to paint the doors of abandoned buildings. There are now over two hundred of them, the quarter is full of restaurants, and the project is credited with reviving it.

The roads above town are a sequence of hairpins. Photo: Pexels

It is also where the fortress and the cable car station are, so it works as the start or the end of both days.

Madeira wine, and how it happened

Madeira was a stop on the route to the Americas and the Indies, and the wine loaded there was fortified to survive the journey. It then sat in hot holds crossing the tropics, and the heat changed it. When the barrels came back unsold, the wine was better.

Producers now replicate that deliberately, by heating the wine slowly over months or years. The result is almost indestructible: an opened bottle keeps for months, and hundred year old vintages are still drinkable.

Sercial: the driest, served cold as an aperitif.

Verdelho: medium dry, and the versatile one.

Bual: medium sweet, with dried fruit.

Malmsey or Malvasia: the sweetest and the most famous.

Tastings at the old lodges in the centre are free or cost very little.

Poncha, the local spirit with honey and lemon, is a different and much stronger matter.

Yes. The levada walks, Cabo Girao and Pico do Arieiro are all within an hour by car, and most organised excursions start from the city.

A city stacked up a hillside, with a cable car up, a wicker sledge down, a market with fish that look prehistoric and a wine invented by accident at sea.

Give Funchal two days before you start the levadas, ask the price before you accept the fruit, and finish with a glass of Malmsey.
