<h2 id="what">What Trebinje is and why it feels Mediterranean</h2>
<p>The town sits on the Trebišnjica river, in a karst plain ringed by bare hills. It is close enough to the Adriatic to share its climate: long dry summers, mild winters and a number of sunny days a year comparable with the Dalmatian coast. Hence the local name, the town of sun.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">
    <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/8987442/pexels-photo-8987442.jpeg?auto=compress&#038;cs=tinysrgb&#038;w=1200" alt="A river running under an arched stone bridge" style="width:100% !important;max-width:100% !important;max-height:470px !important;object-fit:cover !important;display:block !important;"></p>
<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Illustrative image of an Ottoman arched bridge. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>The main square, with old plane trees casting complete shade in summer, works exactly as a Mediterranean square works: people sit over coffee for hours. On Saturdays a local produce market runs under the same trees, with cheese, honey, dried figs and rakija.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">
    <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/19062087/pexels-photo-19062087.jpeg?auto=compress&#038;cs=tinysrgb&#038;w=1200" alt="A town surrounded by green fields" style="width:100% !important;max-width:100% !important;max-height:470px !important;object-fit:cover !important;display:block !important;"></p>
<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Illustrative image of a Herzegovinian settlement. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>Administratively Trebinje lies in Republika Srpska, one of the two entities that make up Bosnia and Herzegovina. For a visitor that changes nothing practical: the same currency, the same entry rules, the same country at the border. It shows in the alphabet, though, because the signs are also in Cyrillic.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<h2 id="town">What there is to see in town</h2>
<p>It is a small town and covers on foot in half a day. These are the points that genuinely repay the time.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">The plain around the town is watered by the Trebišnjica. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<ul>
<li>The old town, Stari Grad: a rectangle of lanes inside the Ottoman walls, with cafes and a few workshops. Crossed in ten minutes.</li>
<li>The Arslanagić bridge: a sixteenth century Ottoman bridge with two large arches and two small ones. The important detail comes below.</li>
<li>Hercegovačka Gračanica: an Orthodox church on Crkvina hill above town, with the best panorama. It is a replica of the Gračanica monastery in Kosovo, built in the year 2000.</li>
<li>The Museum of Herzegovina, in the former Austro-Hungarian barracks.</li>
<li>The water mills on the Trebišnjica, outside town, left from when the river still ran free.</li>
<li>The Saturday market under the plane trees, if you catch the day.</li>
</ul>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">
    <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/16571240/pexels-photo-16571240.jpeg?auto=compress&#038;cs=tinysrgb&#038;w=1200" alt="A bridge and a tower in a town" style="width:100% !important;max-width:100% !important;max-height:470px !important;object-fit:cover !important;display:block !important;"></p>
<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Illustrative image. The Arslanagić bridge was moved stone by stone. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>The bridge deserves an explanation. It was built in the sixteenth century somewhere else, and in the nineteen sixties, when the Trebišnjica was dammed for hydroelectricity, it was going to end up underwater. It was taken apart stone by stone, numbered and rebuilt upstream, where it stands today. It is not on its original site, and that is rarely mentioned.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<h2 id="wine">The wine: žilavka, blatina and the monastery cellar</h2>
<p>Herzegovina has two native grape varieties found practically nowhere else, and the Trebinje area is their centre.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<ul>
<li>Žilavka: a white grape with good acidity and mineral notes, which copes with the poor karst soil. The standard white wine of the country.</li>
<li>Blatina: a red grape with a rare botanical quirk. Its flowers are functionally female, so it cannot self pollinate and must be planted alongside another variety that fertilises it.</li>

<p>Tvrdoš monastery, a few kilometres from town, is the most interesting stop. It is Orthodox, raised on Roman foundations, and the monks have made wine in its cellars for centuries. You can visit, taste and buy directly. It is not a tourist set piece, it is a working production.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

    <span class="eng-tip-title" style="color:#33415c !important;font-weight:700 !important;display:block !important;margin-bottom:5px !important;">How a wine tour works here</span><br />
    The area does not yet have a signposted wine route as in France or Italy. The larger wineries, such as Vukoje, take visitors by appointment, and the small ones expect a phone call first. The simplest approach is to ask your accommodation to arrange two stops in an afternoon, with transport, because you do not drive after tasting. Prices are low: a good bottle of žilavka costs around eight to fifteen euros direct from the producer.
  </div>
<h2 id="around">What is nearby, within the hour</h2>
<p>The location is the town main advantage. You are thirty kilometres from Dubrovnik, an hour from the sea and two hours from Mostar.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">The area has the largest area under vine in the country. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<ul>
<li>Dubrovnik: about forty minutes, with a border crossing. Many people sleep in Trebinje and visit Dubrovnik by day, because prices are several times lower.</li>
<li>Vjetrenica cave: the longest cave system in the country, with remarkable subterranean fauna. About an hour away.</li>
<li>Popovo polje: the karst plain where the Trebišnjica used to disappear underground before the dams.</li>
<li>Mostar and Blagaj: about two hours north.</li>
<li>The Montenegrin coast, through the border crossing to the east.</li>
</ul>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">
    <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/5489474/pexels-photo-5489474.jpeg?auto=compress&#038;cs=tinysrgb&#038;w=1200" alt="Wine barrels in a cellar" style="width:100% !important;max-width:100% !important;max-height:470px !important;object-fit:cover !important;display:block !important;"></p>
<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Illustrative image. Tvrdoš monastery has a winery in its cellars. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>The price difference from Dubrovnik is real and large. Good accommodation in central Trebinje costs about what a coffee and lunch cost in the neighbouring city, and the drive between them takes less time than finding a parking space there.</p>

<p>Summer is very hot, regularly passing thirty five degrees, and the bare hills around do not help. Spring and autumn are clearly better, and October catches the harvest as well.</p>
<p>Payment is in convertible marks, though euros are accepted in many places at a rate that is not always favourable. Cash machines work normally. Visitor information is published by <a href="https://www.visitbih.ba/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Bosnia and Herzegovina tourism board</a>, and the monastery winery has its own presentation at <a href="https://www.tvrdos.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tvrdoš</a>.</p>

<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Trebinje is the Mediterranean corner of Bosnia: plane trees in the square, an old town the size of a neighbourhood, an Ottoman bridge moved in its entirety and two grape varieties you will not find anywhere else.</p>
<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Use it as a cheap base beside Dubrovnik, give it a full day, go to Tvrdoš for the wine, and come in spring or autumn, because summer burns.</p>

<h2 id="waterfall">The waterfall in the middle of Jajce</h2>
<p>The Pliva empties into the Vrbas over a drop of about twenty two metres, right at the edge of the old centre. Very few towns in Europe have a fall of that size inside them, and here you reach it on foot, five minutes from the square.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<p>It used to be higher. In the nineteen nineties a landslip altered the lip and reduced the drop, and later works stabilised the banks. A small fee is charged for access to the lower platform, from which you see it head on.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<p>The flow matters a great deal. In spring and after rain the fall is powerful and soaks you from ten metres away. By late summer in dry years it thins visibly. If you are coming for it, ask your accommodation how the water is running.</p>

<h2 id="royal">The royal town and the end of the Bosnian kingdom</h2>
<p>Jajce was the last capital of the medieval kingdom of Bosnia. The fortress on the hill behind the town is well preserved, takes twenty minutes to climb and carries the royal coat of arms over its gate.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Illustrative image. The Pliva lakes lie upstream. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>Stjepan Tomašević, the last king of Bosnia, was crowned here in 1461. Two years later, after the Ottoman conquest, he was beheaded and the kingdom ceased to exist. The town then spent two decades under Hungarian rule before passing definitively to the Ottoman Empire.</p>
<p>In town you also find the clock tower, the Esma Sultanija mosque and the Tower of Saint Luke, tied to a story worth telling: the relics of the evangelist Luke are believed to have been kept here, brought as a dowry, until they were sold to Venice.</p>
<h2 id="underground">The catacombs and the Temple of Mithras</h2>
<p>Beneath the town lie two entirely different things, both rare.</p>
<p>The catacombs are in fact an underground church cut into rock at the start of the fifteenth century by Duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, intended as a family mausoleum. It was never finished, and the interior carries carved symbols that have generated all manner of interpretations. It is cold, dark and impressive precisely because it is unfinished.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<p>The Temple of Mithras is over a thousand years older, from the fourth century, and is one of very few mithraea surviving in Europe. It has a relief of Mithras slaying the bull, the central scene of this Roman cult that spread mainly among soldiers. It is visited with a guide, and the key comes from the museum.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

    <span class="eng-tip-title" style="color:#33415c !important;font-weight:700 !important;display:block !important;margin-bottom:5px !important;">How to arrange the underground visits</span><br />
    The catacombs and the Mithraeum do not keep continuous hours and cannot be visited unaccompanied. Go first to the tourist information centre in town, which arranges access, sometimes by grouping several visitors together. The ticket is cheap, but there can be a half hour wait. Do not leave this to the last hour of the day, because access closes early, particularly out of season.

<h2 id="avnoj">The building where federal Yugoslavia was founded</h2>
<p>On 29 November 1943, in a former gymnasium in Jajce, the second session of the anti-fascist council of national liberation took place. There the federal structure of the future Yugoslavia was decided, with six equal republics, and a provisional government was formed.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<p>The building is now a museum, with the hall preserved almost in its original form. The date was a national holiday across Yugoslavia for nearly fifty years, and for the history of the region it is a reference point, whatever anyone thinks of what followed.</p>
<p>The visit takes twenty minutes and costs very little. It is worth doing even if the period does not interest you, because it explains why Bosnia is administratively shaped the way it is.</p>
<h2 id="mills">The Pliva lakes and the watermills</h2>
<p>About five kilometres from town the Pliva forms two linked lakes. Between them stands the cluster of watermills, roughly twenty tiny wooden structures set on the sills, each with its own wheel.</p>

<p>The lake area is where the town goes in summer: a laid out beach, kayaks, restaurants on the bank. It is the best way to end a day after the fortress and the underground sites.</p>

<p>The town combines naturally with rafting on the Vrbas, in the stretch between Jajce and Banja Luka, where day descents run regularly. It is one of the best rafting areas in the Balkans and far less busy than the Tara or the Neretva.</p>

<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Jajce packs a twenty two metre waterfall, the fortress of a kingdom that ended in 1463, a Roman temple and the hall where the map of federal Yugoslavia was drawn into a single square kilometre.</p>
<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Give it a full day, sort out the underground visits at the information centre in the morning, check the waterfall flow before you set off, and finish at the lakes with the mills.</p>

<h2 id="what">What Sutjeska park is and how it divides</h2>
<p>The park is organised around the valley of the Sutjeska river, which cuts it from north to south. The Maglić massif rises to the east and the Zelengora plateau to the west, with the water running between them. The main road passes right through the middle, which makes access unusually easy for a mountain park.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<p>Zelengora is the gentle half: high pasture, woodland and over twenty small glacial lakes, known locally as the eyes of the mountain. This is the zone for easy and moderate walking, with waymarked trails linking the lakes.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<p>Maglić is the serious half. It reaches 2,386 metres, the highest point in the country, right on the border line. The climb is not technical, but it is long and exposed, and the final section runs along a ridge.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<h2 id="perucica">Perućica, the primeval forest</h2>
<p>This is the main reason the park exists. Perućica covers about 1,400 hectares of forest that has never been cut, something that in Europe can otherwise only be said of Białowieża, on the Polish and Belarusian border.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">
    <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/13508834/pexels-photo-13508834.jpeg?auto=compress&#038;cs=tinysrgb&#038;w=1200" alt="Coniferous forest on mountain slopes" style="width:100% !important;max-width:100% !important;max-height:470px !important;object-fit:cover !important;display:block !important;"></p>
<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Illustrative image. Some trees exceed fifty metres. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>In practice that means a structure you do not see in worked woodland: trees over three hundred years old and fifty metres tall, standing beside saplings, beside fallen trunks left to rot where they lie, because they feed the soil. There are no made paths and nothing is taken out of the forest.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Perućica is one of the last primeval forests in Europe. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<div class="eng-tip" style="background:linear-gradient(135deg,#f3efe7,#e9e4da) !important;border-left:5px solid #d9a441 !important;border-radius:0 10px 10px 0 !important;padding:18px 22px !important;margin:1.6rem 0 !important;">
    <span class="eng-tip-title" style="color:#33415c !important;font-weight:700 !important;display:block !important;margin-bottom:5px !important;">Access is by authorised guide only</span><br />
    Perućica is a strict reserve. You do not go in alone, you do not go in without booking, and you do not wander in from the road. The guide is booked through the park administration, usually a day ahead, and group sizes are limited. The fee is small. The usual route leads to the Dragoš Sedlo viewpoint, from which you see the Skakavac waterfall, about seventy five metres high, falling inside the forest. You do not reach its base: you look from above, precisely so that nobody walks through the reserve.
  </div>
<h2 id="tjentiste">The Tjentište monument and the battle of 1943</h2>
<p>In the middle of the park, in a broad meadow, stand two enormous concrete wings about nineteen metres high, raised in 1971 to a design by the sculptor Miodrag Živković. It is one of the best known modernist monuments of the former Yugoslavia and appears constantly in architecture books.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">The trails are waymarked, but the primeval forest needs a guide. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>It commemorates the battle of the Sutjeska, in May and June 1943, when Partisan forces were encircled in this valley and broke out at very heavy cost. It was one of the decisive battles of the war in Yugoslavia.</p>
<p>Beside the monument stands a memorial house with large mural frescoes, damaged during the war of the nineteen nineties and partly restored. Access inside depends on opening hours and is not guaranteed.</p>
<p>The monument is visible from the road and can be visited freely at any time. It is worth the stop even if you came only for the nature, because it is one of the few works of its kind still standing in the landscape it was designed for.</p>
<h2 id="trails">The trails and the lakes</h2>
<p>The park has waymarked trails at every level, and the difference between them is considerable. These are the ones that repay the most.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<ul>
<li>The Zelengora lakes: Orlovačko, Kotlaničko, Donje and Gornje Bare. Two to five hour walks, easy, through woodland and pasture.</li>
<li>The Dragoš Sedlo viewpoint towards Perućica: short, but only with a guide.</li>
<li>Maglić: eight to ten hours return, with a large height gain and an exposed ridge at the end.</li>
<li>Trnovačko lake: the most photographed in the region, heart shaped. Reached from the park, though the lake is technically in Montenegro.</li>
<li>The Sutjeska valley: easy walks along the river, suitable with children.</li>
</ul>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<p>About Trnovačko one thing has to be said plainly: the route crosses the border. Most walkers do it without formalities, because there is no checkpoint on the mountain, but technically it is an unofficial crossing. Check the current position beforehand, particularly if you are with an organised group.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<h2 id="safety">What to know before heading onto the mountain</h2>
<p>The park is not dangerous, but it has a few features worth knowing in advance.</p>
<p>The first concerns recent history. Some peripheral areas of the park were contaminated with mines in the nineteen nineties, and clearance took a long time. The risk to anyone staying on marked trails is very low, but the rule is firm: do not cut across unknown ground and do not enter abandoned buildings.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">
    <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/27151606/pexels-photo-27151606.jpeg?auto=compress&#038;cs=tinysrgb&#038;w=1200" alt="A footpath through the mountains" style="width:100% !important;max-width:100% !important;max-height:470px !important;object-fit:cover !important;display:block !important;"></p>
<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Illustrative image of a waymarked trail. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>The second is the wildlife. Bears, wolves and chamois live in the park. Encounters are rare, and ordinary bear country behaviour is enough: make noise on the trail, do not leave food out, do not approach cubs.</p>
<p>The third is the weather. Above two thousand metres, fog and afternoon storms build fast in summer, and there is no phone signal in entire valleys. An offline map, a loaded track and a warm layer in the pack, whatever the forecast says.</p>

<p>Foča is also the rafting centre for the Tara, in the canyon a few dozen kilometres away, so combining the park with a rafting day is the most natural pairing in the area. Accommodation inside the park amounts in practice to one hotel at Tjentište, with everything else in Foča.</p>

<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Sutjeska gathers into one park one of the last two primeval forests in Europe, the highest peak in the country, and a concrete monument that became a textbook image of architecture.</p>
<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Book the Perućica guide a day ahead, stop at Tjentište even if you came for the nature, stay on the marked trails and pack a warm layer whatever the forecast.</p>

The water emerges straight from a cave at the foot of a two hundred metre limestone wall, at a volume so great that it forms a navigable river immediately. Pressed against the rock, exactly where the water comes out, stands a dervish monastery built around the year 1520.</p>

<h2 id="spring">The Buna spring, the reason everything here exists</h2>
<p>Vrelo Bune is one of the most powerful karst springs in Europe. The water gathers in an underground system in the mountains behind and surfaces through a cave mouth at the base of a vertical wall, with an average discharge measured in tens of cubic metres per second.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">The building stands exactly where the water leaves the rock. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>The visual effect is abrupt: not a trickle that grows gradually, but a wide, green turquoise, cold river appearing within metres of the rock. Short boat trips run to the cave mouth, and the water sits at around ten degrees all year.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<p>The place was sacred long before the monastery. The combination of water rising out of stone and a wall closing off the valley was read as a special site by every culture that passed through.</p>
<h2 id="tekke">What the Blagaj tekke is and how it got here</h2>
<p>A tekke is the house of a dervish order, a place of Islamic mysticism used for prayer, retreat and hospitality. The one at Blagaj was raised around 1520, in the first decades of Ottoman rule in the region, and is associated with the Bektashi order.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">The style is Ottoman with Mediterranean adaptations. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>The architecture is Ottoman with Mediterranean adaptations: a stone ground floor, a timber framed upper storey, large windows facing the water and a shallow pitched roof. The building has been restored several times, most recently about a decade ago, and that restoration drew local criticism for altering details of the earlier form.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<p>Inside there are several small rooms with carpets and woodwork, and the one that matters is the divanhana, the room with windows directly above the water. The noise of the river fills it. In an adjoining structure lie the tombs of two dervishes, who local tradition says came from Central Asia.</p>
<h2 id="visiting">How to visit: rules, hours and dress</h2>
<p>This is a working place of worship, not a museum, and the rules are observed without exception.</p>

<li>A small ticket is charged at the entrance.</li>
<li>Shoes come off before entering the building.</li>
<li>Dress modestly, no shorts and no bare shoulders.</li>
<li>Women cover their heads, and scarves and wrap skirts are lent at the entrance.</li>
<li>Photography is generally allowed, but not during prayer and not of people without their consent.</li>
<li>Hours are shorter in winter and change during Ramadan.</li>
</ul>
<div class="eng-tip" style="background:linear-gradient(135deg,#f3efe7,#e9e4da) !important;border-left:5px solid #d9a441 !important;border-radius:0 10px 10px 0 !important;padding:18px 22px !important;margin:1.6rem 0 !important;">
    <span class="eng-tip-title" style="color:#33415c !important;font-weight:700 !important;display:block !important;margin-bottom:5px !important;">What time to arrive</span><br />
    This is the one recommendation that genuinely changes the visit. Between ten and four the village receives coaches from Mostar, from Dubrovnik and from the Croatian coast, and the access path and the terraces become hard to move through. Come before nine in the morning or after five in the afternoon. The difference is between a crowded building where you queue and a place where you can hear the water. If you can, avoid summer weekends entirely.

<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

</p></div>
<h2 id="fortress">The fortress above the village, which almost everyone misses</h2>
<p>On the rock above the village stand the ruins of Stjepan-grad, the stronghold of Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, the fifteenth century noble who took the title of herzog and from whom the region takes the name Herzegovina.</p>
<p>The climb takes thirty to forty minutes up a steep, stony path with no shade. Entry is free. From the top you see the whole Buna valley, the village, the tekke from above and, on a clear day, as far as Mostar.</p>
<div class="eng-img" style="margin:1.8rem 0 !important;border-radius:10px !important;overflow:hidden !important;box-shadow:0 4px 18px rgba(0,0,0,0.12) !important;">

<div class="eng-img-caption" style="background:#e9e4da !important;padding:10px 16px !important;font-size:0.86rem !important;color:#6b7280 !important;text-align:center !important;font-style:italic !important;">Mostar, twelve kilometres away, is the usual base. Photo: Pexels</div>
</p></div>
<p>The contrast is the most interesting thing about Blagaj: below, dozens of coaches and full terraces; above, forty minutes away, an entire fortress where you are often alone. Take water, because nothing is sold along the way.</p>
<h2 id="around">What else is nearby</h2>
<p>Blagaj takes two or three hours, so it has to be combined with something else. Fortunately everything worth seeing is under an hour away.</p>

<h2 id="concluzie" style="color:#e8bc6a !important;border:none !important;margin-top:0 !important;padding:0 !important;background:none !important;">Conclusion</h2>
<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Blagaj is a place built around a single geological fact: an entire river emerging from a cave at the foot of a two hundred metre wall, with a dervish monastery pressed against it for five centuries.</p>
<p style="color:#e3ded4 !important;">Come early in the morning or towards evening, respect the rules of the house, climb the forty minutes to the fortress, and combine the visit with Mostar or Počitelj.</p>
